I am decent at deer hunting and I am learning how to ice fish. This Christmas, my sister and brother in law got me a couple turkey calls since inane said that I want to learn. There is a round scrape thing, a mouth piece and wooden box thing (like my terminology and details?).
After I opened my gift, ironically there were about 20 turkeys on the back lawn. I stepped out on to the back porch and tried the round scrape. I thought I did ok but when the turkeys heard it, they took off! Not just like walked off, but started running into the woods and up the mountain. They couldn't get away from me fast enough. So, I need to work a lot of my calling techniques or put Dad in one location and have the turkeys run towards him.
But what do you all recommend? What or how should I start to learn these new hunting toys?

I could never understand the need for camo from head to toe and turkey calls. The same, as with you...just open the back door and viola..there are turkeys! Anyways, keep scraping away on your round scrape thing..
ReplyDeleteI just couldn't believe that they ran. I could see if they stopped and maybe headed back a little bit, but to up and run... I need to learn a whole new species of animal.
DeleteThe call's take a bit of practice to get used to not that I am great at it either but I wish you all the luck. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteThanks Rick!
DeleteIt looks like you have found yourself a new hobby- keep at it and like anything, it will become second nature.
ReplyDeleteI hope so Peter! I also need to learn how to shoot a new gun since I don't think my 30-06 will be good on a turkey.
DeleteI want to wish you a healthy and prosperous New Year! I enjoy you blog and look forward to seeing your achievements in 2013.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Bonnie! There are some great things happening in 2013 and I totally appreciate your support. Have a great New Year!
DeleteErin, Stick with it, calling is really all about cadence once the cadence is right the rest will follow. When I started calling turkeys over twenty years ago I remember a buddy of mine told me to rent a movie called, "Brunettes, Blondes, and Red Heads" it was a movie put out by the Druiry Brothers and how they got their wives involved in turkey hunting and calling. truly amazing as well as informative. I can only imagine how hard it will be to find, but anything put out Mark and Matt are well worth watching. Have a great New Year, hopefully rabid and I will see you on the ice.
